Behaviors of an Effective Leader

Conflict can naturally occur when working with others, and a leader’s actions when conflict rises are crucial to solving them. Behavior matters since a person’s actions reveal more about them than their words. Effective leaders guide others through problems in a productive way through displaying certain behaviors. Displaying these behaviors helps build trust and understanding in the workplace. An effective leader should create transparency, practice accountability, and listen first.

An important behavior leaders should display is creating transparency. Creating transparency would allow for leaders to clear any misunderstandings or confusion that could lead to conflicts in the future. A leader should explain everyone’s role clearly to prevent any confusion about their responsibilities. Being open helps others feel respected and heard, which would make it easier to prevent conflicts or solve them if problems do arise. Transparency allows for everyone to have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the company’s policies, which ensures that there is no confusion regarding the rules and expectations of the workplace.

Leaders also help overcome conflict by taking accountability. Effective leaders practice accountability to display responsibility and fairness within every member of the workplace, even if they are a leader. A leader taking responsibility for their actions or admitting when they are wrong encourages others to do the same. This creates trust in the workplace, which would help avoid conflict when the employees know their leader is fair and reliable. Instead of blaming others for a mistake, a conflict could easily be solved through taking accountability and being responsible. Taking accountability is an admirable trait for a leader to have to display their reliability.

Listening first is an important behavior to display as a leader. This creates a work environment where people feel comfortable to express their concerns and opinions. If a conflict does arise, it can quickly be solved when people are listening respectfully before responding. Listening first allows a leader to really understand what started a problem and the steps to take to solve it. Listening first allows a leader to display respect toward their employees and others because they demonstrate that they care about their perspective. A leader displaying this behavior encourages others to do the same, which would create a respectful workplace and reduce conflict because everyone listens and responds thoughtfully.

Leaders create an environment where problems can be resolved effectively by creating transparency, taking accountability, and listening first. Creating transparency allows for clear expectations to be set in the workplace, allowing for less misunderstandings to occur. Leaders can become role models by taking accountability, encouraging others in the workplace to do the same. Listening first displays that leaders care about the voice of others and demonstrates respect in the workplace. These positive traits allow for conflict to be reduced or quickly resolved when raised. The behaviors of effective leaders significantly affects the workplace and reduces conflict when displaying the right behaviors.
